Ali by Pete Roberts on 23/07/02
Forget what you think you know...
This was a film that had to be made and really had to be made quite well to receive any form of credit. Thankfully Michael Mann has proven he is a very talented Director and Will Smith has shown he is more than just a cool guy who shoots aliens once every few years. His portrayal of Ali is nothing short of brilliant and shouldve been ranked with Russell Crowe in the Oscar stakes, well above eventual winner Denzel Washington. With a great supporting cast including the sensational Jon Voight as muppet lookalike Howard Cosell the film makes good on its hype and really gives the audience the story we deserved. Brilliant video and audio and a good extras package with a couple of quality pieces makes this film and DVD a great addition to anyones collection. [Full Review]

American Outlaws by Pete Roberts on 08/07/02
Bad Is Good Again
Despite some enormous plot holes and terrible writing at times American Outlaws somehow manages to entertain. Suspension of disbelief is the key but the performances of some competent cast members help to lift this one just above average. A good video and audio mix and a couple of quality extras make this one a decent rental title to take a look at before the retail release at a later date. Hard to pick if youll enjoy this one but take a look and find out for yourselves. [Full Review]

100 Women by Pete Roberts on 26/06/02
A frantic, sexy, funny tale
Get through all the crappy sexual humour and the lame attempts at being downright disgusting and youve got yourself an easy-to-watch, lighthearted romantic comedy. Sam seemed to be more of a kook than kooky at first but he soon became quite likable in his quest for love. There is genuine interest raised about what really happened to Hope which keeps you at least half concentrating on the screen throughout the movie. Chuck in Annie, some more beautiful women, some gratuitous nudity and a pretty coy ending and youve got yourself a none-too-surprising flick thatll still give you a bit of fun along the way. A full frame video transfer, the bizarre inclusion of a DTS track and a practically bare-bones extras department prove that this flick and DVD are pretty much a mixed bag. [Full Review]

Walking With Beasts by Pete Roberts on 23/06/02
From A Time The World Forgot
Just like Walking With Dinosaurs, Beasts is a great account of life all those years ago. It is so interesting to see what was happening on our planet back then and how things can change over time. One can only imagine the things that went on but with series such as these we are able to get a much more accurate and informed picture of the animals and landscapes of earth after the dinosaurs were wiped out. The visual quality is extremely good thanks to some talented animators and a high quality transfer, the audio is faultless and the extras package accompanies the main series to great effect. If you were a fan of the dinosaur version then this will be right up your alley. If not then I still strongly urge you to take a look at this highly entertaining account of some of earths biggest and brightest beasts. Brilliant. [Full Review]

1966 World Cup Final - England v West Germany by Pete Roberts on 17/06/02
Could come in handy should England crash this year
Even for a soccer match that was staged over 35 years ago this is pretty compelling stuff. Sure, the modern game is probably much more entertaining in comparison but placed in its appropriate context the World Cup final between England and West Germany would have to rank up there with the best of them. With a decent looking transfer and some great little extras to boot, this release could be just the thing you need should England crash out of this years Cup some time soon. A great way to relive one of the great World Cup finals in history. And what a time to do it. [Full Review]

Hedwig And The Angry Inch by Pete Roberts on 06/06/02
A rip-roaring rock musical
John Cameron Mitchell is one talented bloke. The idea for this film came firstly in the form of an off-Broadway play until Mitchell decided to transfer it onto the big screen. He carries the load of writing, directing and starring in the flick with aplomb. A cross between Moulin Rouge and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig And The Angry Inch is a surprising hit that will have you sympathising with the characters whilst tapping your feet to the songs well after the show is over. Evil Woman by Pete Roberts on 03/06/02
2 Best Friends + 1 Girlfriend = WAR
Something fluffy and slightly humorous is good for a change sometimes and Evil Woman is the perfect film if youre in that type of mood. Typecasting issues aside, the cast put in a pretty solid performance. And dont we know theyve had practice with this material. Black and Zahn provide the laughs, Biggs evokes the sympathy and Peet and Detmer give us the sex appeal in what is a pretty good mix of talent. The story isnt all that creative but its better than some of the brainless teen-oriented comedies of late. A great transfer, serviceable audio and a couple of extras make this a decent disc that is well worth a look. [Full Review]

Town & Country by Richard Schuchardt on 28/05/02

Ocean's Eleven by Pete Roberts on 23/05/02
Are you in, or are you out?
I cant recommend this DVD enough. The film is one of the most enjoyable Ive seen in a long time and really makes for a great nights entertainment. Watching all those A-list stars on screen is absolute candy for the eye and its clear that they were enjoying themselves just as much. Soderberghs talent is undeniable and its very pleasing to see him hone these qualities into a film that aims at pure fun. Couple that with great video and audio and a quality extras package and youve got yourself a must-have for any DVD collection. Lets hope for more of the same in the future. [Full Review]

Blackadder Goes Forth by Richard Schuchardt on 20/05/02

Zoolander by Pete Roberts on 19/05/02
There's more to life than being really ridiculously good-looking
Even for a film that had its origins in a couple of short comedy sketches, this one really does work. The stupid humour pulled off by Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and to a lesser extent Will Ferrell manages to raise more than the odd chuckle without overstaying its welcome. Theres some great comedy moments littered amongst the story decent enough for a comedy like this one. Dont miss the walk-off scene because Ill guarantee itll have you laughing. Then again, the whole film probably will. Top stuff. [Full Review]
