Welcome Rick! (Region 1) at 15.00 on 21/06/02 |
|
It would appear that our very rude staff members have failed to welcome our new staff member! Tut Tut, I'll be having words with you lot later ;) We're happy to welcome Richard Powell to our team of staff. Richard will be having his say with all the latest titles in the DVD world, and I'm sure we can blag him to update the eastereggs every now and again as well ;)
Well Richard has already been typing away at the keyboard, and as you may have noticed, he earlier reviewed the region 1 copy of Black Hawk Down starring Josh Hartnett, Eric Bana, Ewan McGregor, Tom Sizemore, Sam Shepard and Ewen Bremner. Here's an extract from Richard's review:
'Black Hawk Down is without a doubt, one of the finest war films made in the last decade, right up there with Saving Private Ryan. Ridley Scott is truly a master filmmaker; I can hardly await his 14th feature, nor can I wait for the second edition of this DVD to be released. Beautiful Audio and Video presentations make this disc worth purchasing now (it can be found at Best Buy for a mere $15.99), but a sloppy presentation overall makes me want for a Super Bit edition in more ways than just one.'
You can take a look at Richard's full review by clicking here. All that's left to say is welcome to the team Rich! |

Monkey Review (Region 2) at 13.59 on 21/06/02 |
|
If you are unable to leave the past behind, then you maybe interested to read Chris Gould's rather worryingly indepth review of Monkey starring Masaaki Sakai, Toshiyuki Nishida, Shir Kishibe, Masako Natsume and Tonpei Hidari. Here's an extract from the review:
'"In the worlds before Monkey, Primal Chaos reigned. Heaven sought order. But the Phoenix can fly only when its feathers are grown. The four worlds formed again and yet again, as endless aeons wheeled and passed. Time and the pure essences of heaven, the moisture of the Earth, the powers of the sun and the moon worked upon a certain rock, old as creation. And it became magically fertile. That first egg was named "Thought". Tathagata Buddha, the Father Buddha, said, "With our thoughts we make the world". Elemental forces caused the egg to hatch. From it then came a stone monkey. The nature of Monkey was irrepressible...."'
If anybody knows of any suitable numbers to help this chap out...please forward them to [email protected] as soon as possible. Thank you for your time and concern! If you wish to read the review and indulge in the insanity that is Monkey, then you can do so here. |

The Royal Tenenbaums rental details (Region 2) at 12.34 on 21/06/02 |
|
Another rental-only title is heading you way this August, with Buena Vista's announcement of The Royal Tenenbaums. Here's the PR:
Available to rent on DVD and video from 19th August, The Royal Tenenbaums is a unique, quirky comedy about New Yorks most charmingly dysfunctional family. Starring the hilarious Ben Stiller (Zoolander, Meet the Parents) and the stunning Gwyneth Paltrow (Shallow Hal, Shakespeare In Love), 2002's most talked about comedy is the must rent movie of the year.
Wealthy New York Lawyer Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) and his wife Etheline (Angelica Huston) brought up three genius children Chas (Ben Stiller), Richie (Luke Wilson) and Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) and then they separated. Chas started buying real estate in his early teens and seemed to have an almost preternatural understanding of international finance. Margot was a playwright and received a Braverman Grant of $50,000 in the ninth grade. Richie was a junior champion tennis player and won the US Nationals three years in a row.
Two decades later, virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums has vanished, erased by years of betrayal, failure and disaster. The children generally consider this to be their fathers fault and have not spoken to him since their teens. When Royals fortune runs out, he finds himself homeless. Then when he learns that his estranged wife is being wooed by her accountant, Henry Sherman (Danny Glover), Royal decides to make a desperate bid to win his family back. Royal brings about an unexpected reunion, the hilarious consequences of which are far-reaching for three generations of Tenenbaums.
Unfortunately we dont have any details on disc specs at the moment, but as soon as we have something concrete well let you know. |

Coming this July from Anchor Bay Entertainment is the gore-fest Maniac. Directed by William Lustig (Maniac Cop, Vigilante), and starring Joe Spinell and Caroline Munro, Maniac's cult status owes much to the landmark special effects created by the great Tom Savini. Heres the rest of the PR, including the disc specs:
Frank Zito (Spinell) is a deeply disturbed man, haunted by the traumas of unspeakable child abuse. When these horrific memories begin to scream inside his mind, Frank prowls the seedy streets of New York City to stalk and slaughter innocent young women. He takes their scalps as souvenirs and displays them on the heads of the mannequins he keeps dotted around his dingy apartment. Eventually he begins a relationship with a beautiful photographer (Caroline Munro) and attempts to submerge his sick, murderous urges yet the vile compulsions remain.
The feature packed disc looks set to include some interesting material including:
Anamorphic widescreen transfer Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. Audio commentaries by director William Lustig, special make-up effects artist Tom Savini, Editor Lorenzo Marinelli and Joe Spinell's assistant Luke Walter Radio interview with Lustig and stars Spinell and Caroline Munro, 51 minute The Joe Spinell Story' documentary Trailers Stills galleries TV spots Radio spots Poster/stills gallery -Gallery of Outrage', Talent biographies Hidden bonus interview.
Unfortunately, or fortunately for those of you with a weak stomach, the BBFC have had their scissors out again, trimming 58 seconds from Maniacs running time. Maniac is released on the 15th July and carries a price tag of 14.99. |

Thirteen Ghosts (Region 2) at 19.27 on 19/06/02 |
|
Columbia TriStar have just announced the region two release of Thirteen Ghosts. This is a remake of the classic 1960's horror movie. Although the movie performed poorly at cinemas the DVD release looks impressive.
Here is a brief outline of the movie:
A family inherits a spectacular old house from an eccentric uncle (Abraham). There's just one problem: the house seems to have a dangerous agenda all its own. Trapped in their new home by strangely shifting walls, a father (Shalhoub) and his children encounter powerful and vengeful entities that kill anyone in their path. Soon the family is joined by an offbeat ghost hunter who is determined to free the spirits imprisoned in the house. Caught in a frantic race to save themselves before it is too late, the human inhabitants realize the house is a machine built by the mad uncle to unleash the dark powers of the underworld. This is a remake of the 1960 horror film from the king of horror gimmicks, director William Castle (The House on Haunted Hill).
Here's what you can expect from the release:
Widescreen 1.85:1 Anamorphic transfer Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack Audio commentary from director Steve Beck 'Making Of' featurette 12 additional featurettes Trailer Filmographies
Thirteen Ghosts is released on 22nd July and will retail for around 19.99. |
